Team Barloworld's Winning start to 2008
19/2/2008
Team Barloworld's new British signing Steve Cummings has given the team their third 2008 victory after winning the second stage of the Giro della Provincia di Calabria and taking the overall race lead jersey.
Steve Cummings , who had not yet had a professional win, found success after just a few weeks in Team Barloworld's red jersey when he won the second stage of the Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria from Piana to Chairavelle. Cummings won the stage in a sprint after being part of a 15-rider breakaway, which included his Barloworld team mate Paolo Longo Borghini, that formed on the final lap of the race.
The team tactics for the day's stage had centred around helping Baden Cooke in the sprint finish, however directeur sportif Valerio Tebaldi, decided to tell Cummings to take the break as he knew he was capable of finishing stronger due to the uphill nature of the finish.
"I can't believe it. I didn't know what it was like to win as a professional but it's a fantastic feeling. I have to thank the entire team for giving me the self belief me during the recent training camp," Cummings said after his win.
"Being given the opportunity to ride for a professional team like Team Barloworld is a privilege - when my team mates told me to go for the win, I knew it was possible and I owed it to them"
